A Woman and a Man
Juan Gelman
from One Man's Wake
Translated by Hardie St. Martin

A woman and a man swept along by life,
a woman and a man face to face
live in the night, slip over the edge of their hands,
are heard going up, free-floating in the darkness,
heads resting on a beautiful childhood
they created together, sunny, packed with light,
a man and a woman bound by their lips
fill the drawn out night with all their memories,
a man and a woman more beautiful in each other
occupy their place on earth.
