Commentary XIX
Juan Gelman
from Commentaries
(Rome, Madrid, Paris, Zürich, Geneva, Calella de la Costa, 1978-1979)
Translated by Hardie St. Martin

telling the story of our darkness we take in
life  clearly / the smell of damp earth
rising from your hand / where
i plant my heart without expecting

tree or reward / only
the joy of encounter or childhood
going from blood to blood / or light
that should rise up from

strolling musicians singers absorbed
in your prodigy or hand resting
on earth like warmth / or sun
coming up in the city

over punished animals /
sufferings / sorrows /
trembling silently
against the rest of the world
